FACELIFT IN AUSTIN

Introduction

Facelift

At our award-winning plastic surgery office in Austin, facelift surgery is our most popular facial plastic surgery procedure. As your most visible asset, your face is center stage and the focus of your day-to-day interactions with others. Unfortunately, because our face is always exposed, it is also more susceptible to environmental elements that can cause premature aging, like the sun and air pollution. These factors combined with the effects of gravity, genetic makeup, the natural aging process, and other lifestyle choices, all begin to take a toll on facial appearance as the years pass.

While non-invasive procedures like Botox and injectable fillers can stall the effects of the aging process in the short term, the most effective, long-term solution for facial aging is still our specialty Austin facelift procedure. While nonsurgical methods like Botox, peels, and lasers can address issues that relate to volume loss, textural changes, and hyperpigmentation, these options are not suitable for treating the advanced signs of aging.

TAKE YEARS OFF YOUR FACE

WHAT IS A FACELIFT

A Facelift is a surgical procedure designed to lift your sagging facial tissue and give it a firmer, more youthful appearance. The surgery removes excess skin, smoothes out the deeper folds, and tightens the deep facial tissues, which can completely change your entire appearance.

The SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) is a layer of tissue that covers the deeper muscles and fat in the cheek, lower face, and neck. As we age, the SMAS and the underlying soft tissues of the midface descend, creating nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and jowls.

While this isn’t a procedure to fix fine wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin color, or the creases around your nose and upper lip, it is a great way to fix the following issues on your skin’s surface:

  • Loss of skin elasticity
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Loss of facial volume
  • Drooping jowls
  • Excess fat beneath the chin
  • Laxity of neck skin
  • Uneven Pigmentation and sunspots
  • Thinning and drying of the skin
  • The appearance of under-eye bags and crow’s feet

Mini-Facelift

The Mini-Facelift procedure (or limited incision facelift technique) is a great option for patients who wish to address common signs of aging, such as sagging skin and wrinkles on the face and neck, without undergoing more invasive traditional facelift procedures or short-lasting treatments, such as anti-wrinkle injections.

Mini facelifts performed by our board-certified plastic surgeons at Personique always appear natural without having a pulled or stretched appearance. You will have the option of having a mini facelift plastic surgical procedure performed awake under local anesthesia or twilight sedation, which generally results in a more pleasant and relaxing experience for you, along with a faster recovery time.

It can also be an excellent cosmetic procedure for younger patients, who are experiencing what is commonly known as “filler fatigue” or “laser fatigue,” which often occurs in patients in their 30s and 40s who have been using injectable fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, lasers, and facial tightening devices to keep themselves looking young and rejuvenated.

Deep plane facelift

The Deep Plane Facelifts has slowly grown in popularity due to its ability to produce more natural-looking and longer-lasting results. Unlike traditional facelifts that rely on more superficial skin tightening, these “deep” lifting cosmetic plastic surgery procedures elevate or lift the layers of muscle beneath the skin, leaving the skin attached. This allows for a more natural look without giving your facial features that “overly tight” look and reduces the risk of scarring or irregularities.

By releasing all the tethering points and deep planes of the face and performing a comprehensive deep plane lift release between the muscle layers, we can counteract the effects that gravity has incurred over the years. With the release of the deep planes of the face, we reposition the muscles and fat tissue to a more youthful position, which in turn gives the face a lifted, rejuvenated appearance.

In addition, since this advanced technique involves release and repositioning as opposed to the suture pull typically used in the majority of other face lift procedures, there are no opposing tension forces. As a result, patients can enjoy a much longer-lasting result without having to worry about their facelift wearing down over time.

Who are the Best Candidates for a FACELift?

There is no optimal age for having a facelift. Patient health, skin condition, and texture are more important factors in determining an individual’s candidacy. Many of our Austin facelift patients are between their 40’s and 50’s, however, some are in their 70s and 80s as well. An ideal candidate for a facelift is someone whose face and neck have begun to sag, but whose facial skin still retains some flexibility. Good overall health and medical history are essential for any surgery, as well as keeping realistic expectations for the procedure results. These and other factors will be discussed during your complimentary facelift consultation, to determine if a facelift procedure is right for you.

WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP?

The first step in getting a Facelift in Austin is to contact our office and schedule your consultation. While meeting with your plastic surgeon, they will ask you about your medical and health history, answer questions you may have about the surgery, listen to your goals for your facelift, and examine your face. Once they have all the information they need, they will craft your personalized surgical plan. If you agree with their evaluation, you will be able to schedule your surgery date with our Patient Coordinator who will also provide you with instructions to follow before you go in for the procedure.

When discussing your medical and health history, you should be clear and honest with your doctor. The more information that you provide, the better the plan for your surgery will be, and the less opportunity for risks and side effects there will be.

What to Expect on the Day of Facelift Surgery

When you come in for your Facelift procedure, you will meet with your surgeon to discuss the details of your surgery one more time, and then when you are ready, we will administer general anesthesia.

There are several different techniques widely used to perform facelift surgery. The common practice in a traditional facelift is to make an incision in your natural creases, usually behind or in front of the ear. In some cases, the incision is extended to the scalp. The surgeon may also make an additional incision beneath the jawline or the chin if necessary. These incisions are made as inconspicuous as possible within the hairline so that they are easily camouflaged later on.

Next, the skin is gently separated from the underlying fat and muscle. Excess fat may then be excised or removed via liposuction to give the face a sleeker look. Your surgeon will then reshape and tighten the various underlying tissues and facial muscles to restore a more youthful facial contour. Tightening this underlying structure lifts the cheeks, restores definition to the jawline, and firms the neck area.

Once this phase is complete, your surgeon will pull the skin back up over the area, removing excess skin, and reshaping the loose skin around the face as needed. Finally, the incisions are closed up and stitches are placed within the hairline to be hidden by the hair. (As you undergo surgery, staples are put in place. Upon completion, a protective dressing is applied.)

Facelift Recovery

Knowing what to expect after your procedure can help you get through the recovery period a lot easier. Most of our Austin facelift patients can return home the same day as their procedure. You will need to arrange to have a trusted friend or family member pick you up from the surgery center after your procedure.

During the initial days of your post-op period, you can expect to experience some bruising, swelling, and tenderness. Puffiness and discomfort during this time are also normal. Any pain or discomfort that you feel can be controlled with the pain medications prescribed to you for post-op recuperation. Some other common symptoms may include tightness and temporary numbness as the tissues begin to heal into their new position. During this time, patients are advised to wear button-down shirts to avoid disturbing the incisions or facial tissue. Sleeping with the head elevated will help to reduce the amount of swelling.

Most patients will see their plastic surgeon for their first follow-up appointment a few days after their surgery. At this time, your doctor will remove your drainage tubes (if used) and check under your bandages to ensure the healing process is going smoothly.

Your recovery time typically lasts anywhere from one to three weeks. Most facelift patients can return to work within a week or two. Patients are advised to wait a few weeks before resuming exercise or other physical activity. Although the initial recovery phase from a facelift performed takes only a few weeks, the final results of your facelift surgery will not be completely visible until a few months after surgery.

The majority of patients find the facelift recovery time to be well worth the dramatic improvements that this procedure delivers. Facelift surgery is the most effective approach when it comes to comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

FACELIFT FAQs

What factors go into the costs of a facelift?

Facelift costs vary depending on the locale, the extent, and type of surgery, as well as the experience of the facial plastic surgeon themselves. The facial plastic surgeon’s fee for established doctors who have an excellent reputation will tend to be a bit more. Inexperienced surgeons and those with negative reputations will typically lower their rates to try to build their practices.

The type of facility in which your procedure is performed can also affect the cost of facelift surgery. Some plastic surgeons maintain their plastic surgery suites, while others perform cosmetic surgery at a hospital. The latter can bump up facelift procedures’ prices.

Personique® is an AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities) accredited surgical facility. All of our Austin facial plastic surgeons are board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a gold standard in the field.

Your surgery plan will also have a significant effect on the cost of facelift surgery. A mini facelift, for instance, will cost less than a full facelift. In general, the longer and more complicated a procedure, the higher the cost will be. However, a full facelift will achieve more dramatic results than a mini facelift. On the other hand, some patients opt to combine their facelift surgery with other cosmetic procedures, such as blepharoplasty, brow lift, neck lift, etc… Performing other cosmetic treatments at the same time as your facelift surgery will also increase the overall price.

Is a Facelift painful?

Most patients do not experience much pain following their Facelift. There will probably be some deep bruising as well as swelling, making your face feel “heavy”. We can temporarily prescribe you some pain medication to alleviate your recovery, but the side effects will dissipate over the week and you should be fine after that.

Some patients do find the facial bandage they need to wear to be slightly irritating and may seem snug under their chin, but there shouldn’t be any pain from it.

How many appointments will I need?

You will require at least 1 follow-up appointment after about a week after your Facelift surgery. Depending on how you are recovering, your doctor may request you to come back in a week or so, during which time your stitches will be removed. You will be asked to return about 2 – 3 weeks after that, and receive further instructions on the next time you should return.

How long until I see results?

Although you may begin to see changes in your face immediately after surgery, there will be bruising and swelling. Most patients can see results after about a month, with the final results revealing themselves after about 6 months. Once you have fully recovered, you will be able to enjoy your new face for a very long time, with many of our patients getting 12 – 14 years out of 1 procedure.

Can I combine a Facelift with other Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures?

A Facelift is a great procedure to combine with other surgeries such as Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty), Chin Implant, Cheek Augmentation, Brow Lift, or Neck Lift. Some of our Austin patients will even combine it with non-surgical procedures such as laser skin resurfacing, BOTOX, or Dermal Fillers to help get rid of the wrinkles. If you have several areas that you would like facial surgery to enhance, please discuss this with your plastic surgeon during your consultation for their expert recommendations.

What are the risks associated with a Facelift?

Our board-certified plastic surgeons have been providing the best and safest results for the last 4 decades, however, every surgery does come with potential risks or side effects. A Facelift has the following potential risks associated with the procedure that can include, but are not limited to:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Anesthesia reactions
  • Bleeding/ Hematoma
  • Damage to underlying structures
  • Delayed healing
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Skin discoloration
  • Seroma
  • Tissue loss
  • Unsatisfactory results
  • Visible scarring

If you experience any of the following reactions or have any concerns during your recovery, please contact our office immediately.

What happens to the excess skin?

In general, a Facelift involves elevating the skin and tightening the tissues and muscles. Fat in the face and neck may be sculpted, removed, or transferred to another part of your body. The remaining skin is then re-draped over the newly repositioned contours of the face. Your surgeon will remove excess skin and then stitch or tape the wound closed.

Should I choose a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon for a Facelift?

It’s always recommended that you choose a board-certified plastic surgeon for your facelift, as they have extensive training and education in facial anatomy and surgical techniques. While many cosmetic surgeons also perform a facelift, they often don’t have the same level of training.
